Who says you need a lot of money to live in style?  A British farmer built a Hobbit-inspired house for just $250.  59-year-old Michael Buck built the small, charming cottage out of recycled and reclaimed material.  Since the house was constructed in the backyard of his Oxfordshire home, he didn’t have to get special permits.

The former art teacher initially drew the plans on the back of an envelope.

He spent over two years collecting all of the recycled and reclaimed material for construction.  He built the house without the help of electrical tools.

Even the outside of the house is adorned with natural, sustainable decorations, like this sphere of wood.

The house is even equipped with its own well.

A nearby outhouse serves as the main restroom.

“A house doesn’t have to cost the earth, you only need the earth to build it. I wanted to show that houses don’t have to cost anything. We live in a society where we spend our lives paying our mortgages, which many people don’t enjoy.”
