The first days of a newborn are normally accompanied by diligent care and the eyes of experts that check every development for possible complications. A mother and her child normally also receive many visitors while having to calm down an emotionally stricken father all while trying to simply enjoy the wonder of life. But Amber Pangborn’s daughter Marisa starts life in a way that is everything other than normal!
The 35-year-old Amber climbs into her car on a Wednesday evening to drive to her parents. But then the very pregnant woman begins to feel light pains in her underbelly.
The pains increase as she drives. The brave and young woman reacts immediately. To protect her baby and other drivers, she decides to take another route to her parents’ place. A friend of hers had told her of a shortcut through the national park.
But then begins her terrifying ordeal. The pregnant woman’s car is slowly running out of gas and there is no help to be found in sight. The shortcut proves to be a snaking labyrinth of roads and paths. Amber Pangborn ultimately loses her way and gives up. Her contractions are becoming worse and worse!
In the early morning, she births her little daughter all on her own and without medical assistance. And the entire thing happened on the trunk of her car … what an unimaginable ordeal and performance! She named the little girl Marisa. But, she’s not out of the woods yet: she sits far way from civilization inside an enormous forest without cell phone service or gas in her car. Desperate, she begins to pack, plagued by the thought of her own death and that of her newborn daughter.
This awakens unbelievable strength within the young mother. She survives for two days in the forest with just 4 apples and some water in the car. Her strength reserves begin to falter as Amber Pangborn realizes: she must think of something for bees and mosquitos are attacking her little baby! Her imagination runs wild as she imagines what the blood from the birth could attract.
Out of fear of bears she barricades herself into the car. But then the lightbulb goes on in the 35-year-old’s head. She grabs some hairspray and a lighter. Then she does the astounding: she sets a huge bush ablaze. Her plan: to attract help through the smoke and sight of the fire. As the surroundings blaze, her doubts begin to grow. “Have I put us in even MORE danger? Are we going to die?”
But the little family has indescribable luck. A team of forest rangers sees the qualms of smoke and hurries to extinguish it. When they discover the woman with her newborn they are all floored. The two are brought to the closest hospital and treated.
