Laura Nani from Italy is passionate about knitting. When she knitted a pair of socks for her friend's newborn son, they ended up being too small, but this little mistake gave her a brilliant idea.

Laura came up with the idea of forming a group to help needy families by making clothes and socks for premature babies who have to stay in the neonatal intensive-care unit. "Knitting Heart”was the name they gave themselves. Laura began coordinating with a group of friends who also loved to knit. The group grew and soon Laura was working with women from all over Italy. Knitting Heart now has around 1,000 knitters ranging in age from single to triple digits...

It is not an easy job. Premature babies are very delicate and fragile, so the materials for their clothes cannot be pre-worn, they cannot have any traces of acrylic, and they must be seamless in order to prevent allergic reactions or scratches. Many of the women working with Laura are mothers of premature babies; mothers who have been blessed to see their children grow, or for some, who have gone through the pain of losing them...
These women have been united by a common wish to bring a little joy to families going through difficult times.

"Knitting Heart" has achieved extraordinary results in just a few years. It's present in more than 55 Italian hospitals and works closely with a number of related organizations. Moreover, it actively provides support and assistance in emergency situations such as recent natural disasters in Abruzzo and Liguria. This network of extraordinary women package and ship hundreds of blankets, hats, and socks to neonatal intensive care units around Italy every month. Thanks to the doctors and nurses working on the ground, these cozy gifts reach families in need.

They're creating tiny shoes, "the size of half a cookie," says Laura, for children who are sometimes born weighing just 1 lb! It really is heartwarming to know that this group of women is out there, scattered across Italy, all with the goal to send help and hope to new parents and little ones. You can definitely see the love knitted into these warm outfits.
If this project has also touched you, share this article and let’s help this group of women get the support and appreciation they truly deserve!
