The young nurse, Mary Walls Penney, from West Virginia works with patients who suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia. The other day, after her shift, she was waiting in line at the supermarket. When it was her turn to be served, the cashier noticed the name tag with the logo of the care facility on Mary's blouse. She asked her what Mary's job was there. "I'm a nurse," replied Mary. The cashier was shocked at this response. But why? Mary's hair is dyed in all colors of the rainbow. She is tattooed and has visible piercings.
"I'm surprised they let you work there like that. What do your patients think about your hair?" asked the astonished cashier. She then proceeded to ask the elderly lady, who was standing in line behind Mary, "What do you think about her hair?" The lady politely responded that it wasn't exactly her personal taste, but meant no offense. The cashier stirred things up even more by saying out loud that she was "shocked that a nursing facility would allow that".
Her message hit a nerve with her readers. She has received over 240,000 'Likes' so far and her message has been shared over 150,000 times. Other people's comments on Mary's Facebook page aptly state that her colorful appearance and her friendly laughter are probably exactly the right impressions her patients would need to lighten up their days.
