Xena weighed only four pounds when she was found on the streets. She had clearly been abused.
The Dekalb Animal Services shelter in Georgia took her in, and it wasn’t long after that the Hickey family heard about Xena’s story. They decided to come by the shelter and adopt Xena. They have an 8-year-old autistic son named Jonny, and the two clicked right away. So much so that Xena was able to get Jonny out of his very shy shell and ended up really changing the boy for the better. Xena was awarded Dog of the Year in 2013 for positively changing the autistic boy. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) annual awards ceremony took place in New York, and once again Xena was honored! What an amazing dog and it goes to show how the power of dog companionship can really change things around for the better!
